The two-story facility, which used to be a church, has been retrofitted to include two gyms, seven multipurpose classrooms and a game room.
Zooming in
The gym is free for Colleyville residents. Non-Colleyville residents can use the facility if a Colleyville citizen accompanies them, Assistant City Manager Mark Wood said. Guests are required to show proof of residency through a driver’s license or a bill showing their address.
Certain programs, like children's activities, have a fee associated with them. The rec center also has green space that will remain open for free play.
The backstory
The building and land was purchased by Colleyville officials for $8.5 million, leaving $1.5 million of the $10 million budget for renovations. Wood said officials saved roughly $950,000 in funds by having staff complete most of the renovations themselves.
“We knew that the staff had a lot of talent,” Colleyville Mayor Bobby Lindamood said. “They know how to build, how to do electrical, how to do plumbing. ... We hired them to come in and make these changes without having all the markups that a construction contractor would have.”
What’s next
The second gym is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. It will have a full basketball court with four hoops and can be set up for pickleball games. Wood said the floor in this gym will be rubberized so it’s a little bouncier and can withstand food and drinks, as opposed to the hardwood floors in the main gym.
Next year, council will consider placing a referendum on the May 2025 ballot asking Colleyville citizens to vote for an expansion. The expansion options include a weight room, treadmills, an indoor walking track, an outdoor walking track or a children's park.
“I hope that the voters in May will let us expand it,” Lindamood said. “We have to find out what it’s going to cost, and we’ll put that in front of everybody and let them vote on it.”
