The town of Westlake will soon post an application for an open council seat after council member David Quint resigned in July.

What happened?

Quint submitted a written letter of resignation that was acknowledged by council during an Aug. 5 meeting. Council members voted to accept the resignation, and officials will now move forward in selecting a replacement, Westlake Communications Director Jon Sasser said.

Quint could not be reached for comment at the time of publication. He was elected to an at-large position in 2022 and was re-elected to council during the May 2024 election. His term was slated to expire in May 2026, according to Westlake’s website.

“Please note that I am traveling with my family and cannot attend the proposed finance committee meeting,” his resignation letter states. “In addition, upon further reflection and careful consideration, I am hereby electing to step down from council. I wish you all the very best as you continue to move forward.”

What’s next?

Mayor Kim Greaves said the town has to fill the vacancy within 30 days of accepting the resignation to keep council balanced.

Town officials are expected to post an application online and notify residents of the open council seat. All applicants must meet the requirements to run for a town council position.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be registered to vote
  • Must have lived in Westlake for at least 12 months
After applications have been received, council members will then review applications and make an appointment by majority vote. The appointed member will serve until the next general election, which is scheduled for May 2025, according to the agenda.

Also of note

Council could also call a special election, but the cost would fall solely on the town unless it was held in conjunction with another entity’s election.

Council could also choose to not fill the vacancy and wait to have the position filled during the May 2025 general election. If this route was chosen, council would operate with four regular members and a mayor.

Any item before council would still require three votes to pass.
