Grapevine-Colleyville ISD staff will be proposing adjustments to the current transfer policies at the Feb. 24 board of trustees meeting. These adjustments are designed to address challenges with staffing, student placement and enrollment projections.

The details

According to a district news release, the following recommendations will be presented to trustees for consideration at the high school and middle school levels for current resident transfer students:
  • 9th-12th grade students may remain on their current transfer until graduation or return to their zoned campus
  • 8th graders who were on a transfer for the 2024-25 school year may apply for a transfer to one of the comprehensive high schools or attend their zoned campus
  • 6th-7th graders may remain on their current transfer until their 8th grade transition year or return to their zoned campus
The news release states transfers are frozen both at the high school level and at the middle school level until the transition year.

For elementary students, the following recommendations are being made:
  • 5th grade students who were on a transfer for the 2024-25 school year may apply for a transfer to one of the four middle schools or attend their zoned campus
  • Kindergarten-4th graders may remain on current transfer until transition year or return to zoned campus
The news release states transfers are frozen at the elementary school level. After elementary school, these students will attend their zoned middle school and follow their zoned trajectory until graduation.

Zooming out

The news release states there are recommended adjustments for non-resident transfer students, as well. GCISD currently offers limited open enrollment to address declining student populations. Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, new non-resident students will follow designated pathway options, determined by the district based on staffing and capacity.

As this is a complex issue, the news release states that other considerations will be addressed, including:
  • Details regarding transfers for employee’s children
  • Younger siblings of current transfers
  • STEM campus opportunities
  • Specialized or qualifying programs
GCISD officials encourage district residents to attend the Feb. 24 board meeting or stream it live on www.YouTube.com/GCISDTV to hear how potential changes to transfer policies may affect their families.
