A construction date for DayTrip Diner, the new restaurant taking over the old Waffle Way location in Grapevine, has been set.

What's happening?

Renovations will begin May 1 at the freestanding building off Northwest Highway, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The filing states that the privately funded project will be $70,000 and include renovations such as demolition work, installation of new finishes, new equipment and and updated furnishings.

Construction is expected to be complete at the beginning of November.

The backstory

After 37 years in business, Waffle Way closed Nov. 2, 2024, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The restaurant opened in Grapevine in 1987 and served breakfast and lunch options like waffles, hot cakes, omelets, hot beef sandwiches, patty melts, a chef's salad and Frito chili pie.

Owner Natasha Hawkins-Thompson said in an Oct. 1 Facebook post that the rise of operation costs and dwindling business traffic were the reasons behind the restaurant's closing.
