Frisco’s new on-demand public transportation option is now available, according to a May 5 city news release.
The new GoZone microtransit service is available through a partnership between the city and the Denton County Transportation Authority.
What’s happening?
Frisco City Council approved a $15 million contract in April for the GoZone service that will run through at least 2029. DCTA’s board also approved the agreement with Frisco in March.
“DCTA has been a great partner,” Mayor Jeff Cheney said in the release. “This is a program we hope to learn from and expand in the future. It’s going to be an incredible transportation resource for our residents and visitors.”
The service will be available to any users, including Frisco residents and employees, and will cover roughly a third of Frisco.
Cost to the city
Brian Moen, Frisco assistant director of transportation, said in March that the program will be funded through a mix of federal and local dollars.
About $3.3 million of the total $15 million would come from Frisco, with the remainder supported through federal funding secured with assistance from the North Central Texas Council of Governments.
Moen said in March that federal funding for the first year is already in place, while funding for the next two years remains under review.
How it works
To use the app, users must download the GoZone app. From there, individuals can enter a pickup and drop-off address and then book the ride.
The rideshare service will operate Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., per the release. Fare rides will be cashless and cost $3 to $5 per trip, depending on the distance.
The service will also connect to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system through a trip to the Northwest Plano Park and Ride station.
“When people think about public transit, oftentimes they think about a bus or train,” DCTA CEO Paul Cristina said in the release. “But what makes microtransit so successful is the fact it gets people from where they are to where they want to go.”
Cristina said once individuals book a microtransit ride, the GoZone driver will show up within 20 to 30 minutes. Other people may also already be in the GoZone vehicle, and the vehicle may drop off other passengers during the same ride, per the release.
