The project will add two additional lanes, one northbound and one southbound, to Coit Road beginning at Main Street and ending at Buckeye Drive. The road expansion cost just over $6.5 million and was funded by the city.
The project is the first phase of widening Coit Road, which will eventually be six lanes wide from US 380 to SH 121, according to Frisco Senior Civil Engineer Tin Nguyen. The project was split into two phases to address higher trafficked areas of the road first, Nguyen said. The road expansion will serve new neighborhoods under development along Coit as well as traffic coming from the surrounding areas along US 380 and SH 121.
Nguyen advises travelers in the area to watch for various lane closures as construction crews finish remaining median work and equipment replacements as the project winds down.
The second portion of the Coit Road expansion is in the design phase and is expected to cost $6.4 million, according to city planning documents. Phase 2 construction is set to start in early 2024 and will take about a year to complete, according to city planning documents. It runs from Buckeye Drive to US 380.
The first phase of the project also included the installation of Frisco’s first pedestrian hybrid beacon near Maus Middle School at Coit Road and Hay River Trail. The beacon upgraded the walkway from a traditional crosswalk and is a better option to serve the road now that it has been widened to six lanes, Frisco Transportation Planning Manager Joel Fitts said.
“These are typically used at locations where the traffic that is there most of the day doesn’t warrant a full traffic signal,” Fitts said.
The beacons only alert motorists to stop when activated by a pedestrian and will enhance pedestrian safety when crossing, according to the city of Frisco’s website. Frisco will likely see more of these types of beacons as development continues, specifically along PGA Parkway and near the Kaleidoscope Park development, Fitts said.
