The city of Frisco held a town hall meeting Monday night to give residents the chance to ask questions related to the city, some of which centered on transportation and affordable housing.
A few residents asked whether Frisco would increase the number of buses within the city, especially to help provide more transportation options to senior residents.
The city of Frisco contracts with Denton County Transportation Authority. DCTA provides two buses that provide demand response for the elderly and the disabled in Frisco, director of engineering services Paul Knippel said.
Passengers looking for transportation services can call DCTA at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a trip originating in Frisco to destinations within the city, McKinney and Allen.
“We are working with the DCTA to expand that service into parts [of] Plano and will come online this spring,” Knippel said. “There will be some additional capacity with additional flexibility.”
Another resident asked if the city had any plans to provide affordable housing for seniors and for people who might work in the service industry.
“The reality is that home prices have been going up in North Texas and Frisco is not immune to that,” Frisco Mayor Maher Maso said. “This is a byproduct of the land prices and we’re always looking at the affordable housing issue.”
Frisco Planning Manager Anthony Satarino said the city’s comprehensive plan outlines policy for affordable housing and potential solutions.
“We do understand that this is an issue and we understand it’s a need as well,” Satarino said. “But again, balancing land values, property rights and all those things that do factor in, [does] make it a challenge for sure.”
