The zoning process has begun for Frisco ISD as the district plans to open four new schools next year.

During Monday’s regular meeting, FISD board of trustees received preliminary draft attendance zones for the 2018-19 school year.

The rezoning process for the district historically takes place in the fall to relieve overcrowding and balance enrollment in existing schools, as well as draw attendance zones for any new schools opening the following year.

Next year FISD will open Memorial High School, Lawler Middle School, as well as Talley and Liscano elementary schools. These schools were originally supposed to open this school year but the board delayed the opening of the schools last year in order to save the district $15 million in operational costs for the 2017-18 school year.

Scott Warstler, FISD director of planning and business operations, said while these draft zones propose a fix for next year, they also are intended to stabilize enrollment for at least three to four years.

The preliminary drafts show the new schools relieving current schools as well as other rezoning options for other schools to help balance and stabilize enrollment for long-term, Warstler said.

Memorial High School, located at 12300 Frisco St., will relieve Wakeland, Lone Star and Heritage high schools. Memorial High School will open with grades 9-11.

Lawler Middle School, at 12921 Rolater Road, will relieve Vendeventer, Nelson and Scoggins middle schools. As part of this rezoning, some students from Scoggins will move into Vandeventer, and some Fowler Middle School students will move into Clark Middle School.

FISD also plans to relieve Trent Middle School by moving some students into Staley Middle School.

Liscano Elmentary School, at 11222 Mammoth Cave Lane, will relieve Mooneyham, Norris and Sem elementary schools. As part of this rezoning, some students from Sem will move to Tadlock Elementary School, some students from Scott Elementary School will move to Sonntag Elementary School, and some Sonntag students will move into Ashley Elementary School.

Talley Elementary School, at 5900 Coit Road, will relieve Curtsinger and McSpedden elementary schools. As part of this rezoning, some students from Smith Elementary School will move to Curtsinger and some students from Ashley will move into McSpedden.

FISD also plans to relieve Newman Elementary School by moving some students to Pink and Rogers elementary schools.

FISD will hold public hearings on the preliminary attendance zones on Nov. 13 to receive feedback on the proposed zones.

The board will approve the final draft attendance zones in December.
