“We’re taking our time to do [the expansion] right—staying thoughtful about the details, the materials, and the overall feel,” he told Community Impact. “It’s important to us that when the doors fully open, it feels like a natural evolution of Wilkinson’s, not a departure from it.
What’s happening?
Wilkinson said the store will remain in the same location and that the expansion will show that Wilkinson’s Fine Goods is more than a retail store.
“We needed more room to properly showcase the brands we carry, the goods we make in-house and the experience we want people to have when they walk through the door,” he said. “This expansion allows us to slow things down, create space to tell the story right and build something that honors where we came from while giving us room to grow.”
The store is known for its western wear, such as clothes and boots for men and women, and its accessories, including jewelry, hats, leather goods and belt buckles. Wilkinson said he wanted spaces within the store to properly showcase the goods that are brought in and made in-house.
“We’re also creating room for storytelling—our history, our process and the makers we work with,” Wilkinson said. “The goal isn’t just more product—it’s a better experience, one that feels intentional and true to who we are.”
The backstory
Wilkinson’s Fine Goods was founded in 1957 by Wilkinson’s grandfather, Weldon Burgoon, who was from Denton. The store originally was named Weldon’s Saddle Shop & Western Wear, according to the company website.
While Weldon’s Saddle Shop & Western Wear officially shuttered its doors in 2017, Wilkinson’s Fine Goods took over the space and still sells many of the same items today, including the Bell & Oak brand, which specializes in leather goods.
“A family-owned store represents continuity,” Wilkinson said. “It means there’s a real person behind the counter, real values behind the decisions, and real accountability to the community. We’ve seen customers come in who shopped here with their parents or grandparents, and now they’re bringing their own kids. That kind of connection doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built over time.”
