Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere announced the start of the third year of the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship program on Feb. 17 in a conference held at Academy High School.
This year's program aim is to employ 100 interns in various corporations, nonprofit organizations and government entities. Corporations can sign up as recruiters or sponsor internships for students to work in local nonprofit organizations.
The deadline for businesses to sign up for recruiting is April 1. Those who meet the deadline will be able to participate in the April 22 job fair where applicants will be able to interview for various internships. Student internship applications are due March 11.
"Every student intern will get real life experience of [what it's like] being in a business environment," LaRosiliere said. "I see it as a bridge for the workforce to come back to Plano."
Last year about 275 students applied for the Plano Mayor's Summer Internship program. The paid eight-week internship runs from June 13 to Aug. 5 with a minimum pay of $9 an hour. Interns will work 20-40 hours a week.
More than 100 students from PISD have participated in the internship program in the last two years.
"We are determined to reach our goal of 100 internships this summer," LaRosiliere said.
Brian Binggeli, Plano ISD Superintendent of Schools said the experience of applying and interviewing for internships is a valuable skill that students can learn from the process.
Capital One was the founding sponsor in 2014 and continues to be a presenting sponsor for this program. Local companies such as Toyota, Ericsson and Liberty Mutual are some of the businesses already signed up as recruiters.
