Five years ago Robert and Kaci Lyford, along with Kaci’s mother, Luann Van Winckel, opened a shop in downtown McKinney unlike any other seen on the square. Not only did it offer antique decor handpicked by Kaci and Luann but it also featured fresh, farm-to-table lunches crafted by chef Robert.

As the store celebrates its fifth year, it now offers market dinners, rental space for parties and a new perspective on home trends, Kaci said.

Patina Green Home and Market has a sense of style all its own—pre-used/owned merchandise with very little modifications. The more signs of wear and tear the better, Kaci said. To provide these pieces, Kaci and Luann search the world for furnishings with history.

“Our store is ever-evolving,” Luann said. “[We’re] not ordering the same merchandise over and over. We love the challenge. We aren’t looking for any particular item but rather what the world has to offer. From Roundtop to Europe, we are shopping with our eyes wide open, and our theme for the store just evolves.”

The store is full of home decor, furniture, gifts, local produce and pantry items as well as local artisan items, such as jewelry, candles and soaps. Although customers return for Patina’s staple items, new clientele venture into the store full of curiosity, Robert said.

“You never really know what you’re going to get when you come in—you’re walking into an antique store with a deli in a really old downtown with a menu and merchandise that’s always changing,” Robert said.

The marriage between home and market has proven to be successful, the three agreed, telling the story of a shopper who came in for a ham and cheese sandwich and left with a $5,000 150-year-old birdcage.

That scenario is by design, Kaci said, adding that the lunch rush fills the store with customers eying the rotating menu as well as the tables and chairs in the dining area, which also happen to be for sale.

Patina now offers market dinners every weekend, which was once only a monthly affair. Customers are also able to rent the entire store for private parties—something Kaci said had been requested.

Other store requests have included a private design consultation with Kaci and Luann, and both said they hope one day they can oblige.

“Our focus this holiday season celebrates nature and our love of vintage Christmas,” Kaci said. “The store is full of preserved botanicals including herbs and winter greenery, and our collection of vintage ornaments has never been more spectacular.”
