The northern boating channel beneath the Hwy. 146 bridge, which allows boaters in from Galveston Bay, will be closed beginning 8 a.m. July 29, according to a city of Seabrook press release.
The closure, which will last for about a month, will allow contractors to remove the existing fender system so they can begin driving concrete piles to install new bridge foundations as part of the
Hwy. 146 widening project, according to the release.
After the work is done and the northern channel reopens, the southern channel, which allows boaters out to Galveston Bay, will be closed for about six weeks for similar work, the release reads.
During the closures, outbound and inbound boaters will be able to share the remaining open channel, Seabrook and Kemah officials have said. Boat traffic will be controlled by green and red lights; inbound traffic will be able to pass through the channel only in the first half of each hour, and outbound traffic will be able to pass only in the second half of each hour, according to the release.
Flaggers during daylight working hours and electronic message boards will also notify boaters of passing vessels.
