As work wraps up on the south end of the West William Cannon Drive Bridge, crews began construction on the north side of the bridge Aug. 19.

What’s happening?

Those traveling along William Cannon Drive will see the existing lane closures between Woodhue Drive and Menchaca Road have flipped to the opposite side.

About the project

In 2022, cracks formed along the west side of the bridge, which then formed potholes on the road surface.

Identifying around $4 million in emergency funding from the operating budget, the city's Transportation and Public Works Department began work in May 2023 to stabilize the sediment beneath the roadway in order fix the damage and ensure safe travel for the next several decades.

Crews have installed over 650 soil nails into the bridge’s retaining wall before adding a new layer of concrete. Soil nails are steel bars driven into the soil at regular intervals and then secured to the retaining wall. The bars work in tension to help stabilize the soil and prevent movement.

The bulk of the stabilizing work has been completed; however, now personnel are working on road resurfacing, installing guardrails and making pavement repairs. The team will also work on installing privacy fencing along this stretch for homes adjacent to the roadway, as many of the trees along this strip needed to be removed during the construction process.

The entire project is expected to be completed by November.
