Fernando Lucas de Urioste appears headed to win an at-large seat on the Austin ISD board of trustees, with Travis County reporting results from all voting centers late Dec. 14.

De Urioste received 12,455 votes, or 70.06% of the vote, with challenger Lindsey Stringer at 29.94%, or 5,323 votes. All results are unofficial until canvassed.

The two candidates were vying for at large position after neither earned enough of the vote to win on Nov. 5.

About 17,700 voters turned out for the AISD race in the Dec. 14 runoff. Other items on the ballot included an Austin City Council race and Manor mayor.

Fernando Lucas de Urioste continues to lead the race for a seat on the Austin ISD board of trustees, according to Travis County unofficial voting results.

De Urioste holds 69.58% of the vote as of 8:45 p.m. Dec. 14. Challenger Lindsey Stringer holds 30.42%.

Voter turnout for the December runoff in Travis County was low, as only 2.43% of eligible residents participated in the early voting period, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Fernando Lucas de Urioste is leading the race for Austin ISD Trustee At-Large Position 8, a position that represents the entire district, according to unofficial early voting results from Travis County.

De Urioste earned 68.08% of the early vote with 8,690 votes. Lindsey Stringer held 31.92% of the early vote with 4,072 votes.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.


The context

The run-off for the district's remaining board seat comes after none of the original six candidates received enough votes to win the position in the Nov. 5 election. Candidates de Urioste, with 32% of the vote, and Stringer, with 26%, received enough votes to advance to the December run-off election.

The At-Large Position 8 role is one of two board seats that oversees the entire district. The other at-large position, At-Large Position 9, is held by AISD Board President Arati Singh.

About the candidates


De Urioste has campaigned on student and staff retention rates, improving the budget deficit and state funding, and prioritizing transparency of operations. He is endorsed by Noelita Lugo, who formerly held the Trustee At-Large Position 8 title, as well as six current trustees.

Lindsey Stringer is an AISD graduate and parent and has campaigned on improving teacher salaries, increasing community engagement, addressing financial issues and developing better She is endorsed by eight former AISD trustees.
