Several federal and state positions representing Central Texas witnessed competitive party races during the 2024 primary elections, including four U.S. House of Representatives seats, five Texas House seats and one position on the State Board of Education.

With 100% of the polling results in for the state's March 5 primary election, the names to be included on the Nov. 5 general election ballot have been determined.

The race for U.S. House of Representatives District 10 this November will be between Republican Michael T. McCaul and Democratic challenger Theresa Boisseau, after each candidate received over 70% of the vote for their party seat during the primary election.

Receiving nearly 85% of the vote, incumbent Pete Sessions will represent the Republican party for the U.S. Representative District 17 position. There are no Democratic challengers on the ballot.


In the race for the U.S. Representative District 31 seat, Republican incumbent John Carter secured 65.28% of the vote. However, the Democratic seat is still in contention, with Brian Walbridge and Stuart Whitlow heading into a runoff election scheduled for May 28 to determine who will challenge Carter in the general election.

Incumbent Lloyd Doggett will represent the Democratic party in the U.S. Representative District 37 position, after receiving roughly 86% of the the primary votes. There are no Republican challengers on the ballot.

What else?

According to Texas Secretary of State polling results, Republican candidate Ellen Troxclair is poised to challenge Democrat Dwain Handley during the general election for Texas House Representative, District 19. Troxclair received 52% of the vote, while Handley received 57%.


Terry M. Wilson will represent the Republican Party for Texas House Representative, District 20, having secured 59% of the vote in the primary race. There are no Democratic challengers on the ballot.

Democratic primary races were the sole contests in Texas House districts 45, 50 and 52. Erin Zweiner won the District 45 position with 71% of the vote. James Talarico secured a victory with 84% of the votes in District 50; and in District 52, candidates Jennie Birkholz and Angel Carroll are headed for a runoff election in May.

The State Board of Education will see Democrat candidate Raquel Saenz Ortiz, with 79% of the vote, on the November ballot, while the Republican party will hold a runoff election between incumbent Tom Maynard and Mary Bone.
