Two-minute impact
Wheatsville’s Guadalupe Street location opened in 1988 and was renovated in 2009. The announcement of its forthcoming closure came in a special edition of the store’s newsletter, The Wheatsville Breeze. General Manager Bill Bickford shared that the Guadalupe store’s sales have been declining for the last decade.
Bickford also shared at length the effects that Austin Transit Partnership’s Project Connect light rail system will have on the Guadalupe store. He wrote that the project’s Orange Line construction could disrupt business and, once complete, the new road layout could hinder pedestrian and driver traffic to the store.
“This transformative project will undoubtedly provide significant, long-term public benefit to our city and its residents,” Bickford wrote in the newsletter. “However, it may also limit our ability to effectively operate a grocery store at our present location.”
Wheatsville Co-op’s South Lamar store will remain open. Bickford wrote that it is a priority to find new locations in North Central Austin to continue serving Guadalupe Street customers after its closure.
