The school district owns the building at 211 Lee St. that the nonprofit has used for 10 years to provide classes and activities in Hispanic culture, heritage and art. The activities are open to the San Marcos community, according to its webpage.
Centro Cultural de Hispano rents the 12,795-square-foot building—formerly called the Mexican School during segregation—from SMCISD for $6,650 a year.
In September, the board tabled its consideration of having the building appraised to potentially be sold after instructors, teachers and other educators from the school district, Texas State University and elsewhere spoke to the community center’s significance, as previously reported by Community Impact Newspaper.
A public hearing from district staff and an open public forum for citizen presentations are on the agenda to discuss the matter. The board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. March 7 in the Criminal Justice Classroom at San Marcos High School, 2601 Rattler Road.
