The restaurant, located at 802 N. LBJ Drive in San Marcos, is inviting customers, past and present employees, and the community to join celebratory festivities on Feb. 14, which will include giveaways and a “nostalgic look back at Grins’ rich history,” according to a Feb. 8 news release.
“For 50 years, Grins has been more than just a restaurant—it’s been a place where generations of families, students, and friends have come together,” owner Paul Sutphen said in the news release. “We are incredibly grateful for the support of our loyal customers and dedicated staff who have made this journey possible. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with the community that has made Grins what it is today.”
The background
Grins Restaurant, known for its burgers, margaritas, and homemade comfort food, first opened its doors on Feb. 14, 1975. The restaurant is owned by Texas State University graduates Paul Sutphen and Johnny Ferrell.
Sutphen began as the restaurant’s first cook before buying out one of the founding owners. Ferrell later joined as co-owner in 1978.
Originally housed in the Lightfoot residence, the restaurant has undergone three expansions over the years. When it first opened, Grins could seat 60 customers and hosted live music, and today, it accommodates up to 250 guests.
Grins has been voted Best Chicken Fried Steak and Best Onion Rings for the past 10 years, according to the news release.
