The Downtown East project in Pflugerville is expected to reach substantial completion on Dec. 18, according to a Sept. 22 presentation to City Council.
The update
Deputy City Manager Emily Barron said city staff will move into the new City Hall in late December, and it will be open to the public on Jan. 4.
Additionally, a ribbon cutting will take place in January and a grand celebration of the project will be held in April alongside the Slice of Pflugerville event.
Staff training in The Monarch recreation center will begin in November, and the current recreation center will close Jan. 10. The soft opening of The Monarch will take place in mid-January, with a ribbon cutting in February, city staff said.
A closer look
As part of the Downtown East project, a new traffic light is being installed at the intersection of FM 685 and the extended Main Street.
Council member Melody Ryan said some residents have had concerns about how the new light might back up traffic. However, Barron said the city and the Texas Department of Transportation are reviewing the spacing of the intersections and the timing of the signals.
"There will be some adjustments, I’m sure, as needed with any construction activity to ensure the flow of traffic goes swimmingly across the corridor, but that’s something we’ll be watching for to make sure that doesn’t get backed up,” Barron said.
One more thing
City Council gave final approval to a lease agreement with Two Brews LLC, the operator of West Pecan Coffee + Beer, for space in the new City Hall. The cafe is expected to open in January.
The lease runs from November 2026 through Jan. 1, 2030.
“Choosing a local business for City Hall was important to us as we made plans for the building to activate a third space for our community, where people can relax and spend their free time,” Mayor Doug Weiss said.
