Parents of children in Round Rock ISD who use district transportation services will have a new method of keeping tabs on their children in the new school year.

What you need to know

RRISD is discontinuing its use of the Parent Portal to access information about students in the SMART Tag program. This program records when students board and get off their school bus, allowing bus drivers, administrators and parents to effectively track the movements of students.

The tag uses radio frequency identification to update the movements of students in the system, similar to the chip technology used in credit and debit cards that enables contactless payment.

Parents are now being asked by the district to download the SMART Tag parent app, which will replace the parent portal altogether, per the district.

The details

The SMART Tag parent app will allow parents to customize their experience, including:
  • Choosing what kind of alerts they would like to receive, and view the location of their child's bus when they are sent
  • Choosing how much notice they would like before their child reaches their bus stop
  • Adding co-parents and authorized users to view notifications in the app
  • Being notified each time their students boards and exits the bus
Additional information about the new app is available here.
