At Thursday night's meeting,  Round Rock City Council took the last vote needed to approve the city's fiscal year 2017-18 budget and property tax rate. The council unanimously voted to approve the budget of $330 million and to set the tax rate at 43 cents per $100 valuation. The tax rate represents an increase of 6.7 percent over the effective tax rate, which represents the rate that would result in the same amount of revenue collected in FY 2016-17. The property tax rate change would increase the average homeowner's property tax bill by $91 a year or $7.58 per month. The approved budget represents an addition of 35 new full-time employees. It also contains money for a number of impending city projects, including the new city library, the Luther Peterson Public Works Facility, trail projects, infrastructure for a new UPS facility and Kalahari and a number of transportation-related projects. The budget process began in January with a council workshop to set strategic goals. In July, the council held a budget workshop for further direction.
