Hutto City Council took a step Aug.17 toward creating a street maintenance fee to pay for road improvements.

The overview

City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to create a street maintenance fee that would charge all residential homes, commercial businesses and multifamily units $5 a month. However, council also agreed to hold off on the second reading until after it finalizes the city’s budget.

Explained

City Engineer Matt Rector said according to a study done by Roadway Asset Services, Hutto needs to spend $1.2 million to continue to pay for road maintenance. The revenue collected from the new fees, once enacted, would go into a special fund to pay for maintenance costs.

Quote of note

“You’re either going to have to raise property taxes or your’e going to have to raise fees, but somewhere the cost of the roads far exceeds what we’re taking in,” Mayor Mike Snyder said.

Next steps

Council will hold a public hearing on the fiscal 2023-24 budget Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. at Hutto City Hall.
