An adjustment to existing attendance boundaries for Hutto ISD elementary schools will be proposed to the board of trustees in January, district administrators said in December.

What you need to know

With HISD's eighth elementary school, Lee Martinez Elementary School, set to open this fall, administrators will propose a rezone, or adjustment to the attendance boundaries, for elementary school students next month, said Dustin Barton, HISD's assistant superintendent of operations at the board's Dec. 12 meeting.

This rezoning allows the district to rebalance attendance across all of its elementary schools, relieving any capacity issues.

The details

Barton presented plans for the proposal showing Lee Martinez students will be included in the Hutto Middle School feeder pattern.

The proposed attendance zone for LMES is concentrated in the district's northeast area, which is currently zoned for Hutto Elementary School.

What's next?

Several trustees said they would like to see a similar policy along the lines of those implemented for the middle school attendance boundary adjustment that the district completed earlier this year when it comes to rising fifth graders and their siblings.

In February, the district elected to allow rising fifth and seventh graders to stay at their current campuses through its existing transfer process.

The exemption also allowed siblings of rising students in fifth to sixth grade to qualify, to avoid splitting up family members who attend the same campus. Parents will be responsible for transporting students who remain at their current campuses next year.
