Some Hutto ISD elementary students will be at a new school next year: Lee Martinez Elementary.

The district broke ground on the new school in May, and it is expected to open in time for the start of the 2025-26 school year, district administrators say.

What you need to know

In preparation for the school's opening next fall, administrators say they will begin the rezoning process for elementary attendance zones in October.

The process will be similar to the one used to rezone attendance boundaries for the opening of Gus Almquist Middle School, said Dustin Barton, HISD's assistant superintendent of operations, during a Sept. 25 board meeting.

The context

In HISD, the rezoning process for the opening of a new school begins with a series of committee meetings and public meetings to determine how best to adjust attendance boundaries. For the adjustment of Gus Almquist Middle School, a 22-person Attendance Rezoning and Boundary Leveling Committee worked with the district's demographer and administration to develop draft recommendations for board approval.

Barton said he anticipates a final proposal for the rezoning to be brought to the board for action in January.

What they're saying

"I know there's a lot of things—a lot of history—that goes into boundaries and schools zones," Barton said. "We're going to get wide-ranging input to allow us to make proper decisions with certain neighborhoods and decisions, and get that so we can work up the best. It will require a little bit of work though, because it's going to do some balancing."
