Whats happening
HISD will hold a welcome event for Raul Pena, the district's lone finalist in its search for a new superintendent, 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 31 at 200 College St., Hutto. Refreshments will be provided.
The event will follow a vote from the board of trustees on Pena's hiring.
How we got here
In May, HISD Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas announced her retirement, prompting a superintendent search guided by community involvement. She was first hired in 2017, seeing the district through a period of high growth and the COVID-19 pandemic.
HISD trustees voted unanimously to select Pena, Fort Worth ISD's chief talent officer, as the sole finalist in its superintendent search Aug. 10, ending the search for the district's next leader after just over two months.
