Raul Pena was named lone finalist in Hutto ISD's search for a new superintendent Aug. 10.

What happened

HISD trustees voted unanimously to select Pena, Fort Worth ISD's chief talent officer, as the sole finalist in its superintendent search.

How we got here

In May, HISD Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas announced her retirement, prompting a superintendent search guided by community involvement. She was first hired in 2017, seeing the district through a period of high growth and the COVID-19 pandemic.

What they're saying

"I'd like to start by thanking the board for the opportunity," Pena said. "I am very humbled and honored to be here to join the Hutto ISD team and family."

What else?

Following the board's selection of a future superintendent, the district must wait 21 days before making the hire official, under state law. The board will hold a second vote at a later date to officially hire Pena as the district's new leader.
