The 9-acre facility, which used to be a children’s learning and child care center, will include 55,000 square feet of programmable space as well as provide health and wellness programs, recreational programs, and education, enrichment and care for kids.
YMCA of Austin, a nonprofit community enterprise, has collaborated with Concordia University Texas in bringing the YMCA to Northwest Austin.
Concordia is also expected to break ground on a new athletic complex in early 2023. The complex will include a soccer stadium, track and field facilities, and a tennis court. Plans include using these facilities as part of a partnership with the YMCA.
The decision to bring a YMCA to Northwest Austin is based on community feedback as old as 2014 when YMCA of Austin received a Change.org petition requesting a YMCA be constructed in West Austin.
“We plan to listen to our neighbors first to learn how we can best serve them, and we want to find more partners who can help bring this facility to life,” said Kathy Kuras, president and CEO of YMCA of Austin.
According to a press release, the YMCA will hold in-person and virtual meetings to get input from the community about what their needs are.
The first in-person community feedback event is planned for Oct. 22 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the facility that will be modified into the new YMCA, said Sean Dole, vice president of communications and membership. He said this will help plan out the architectural and construction timelines, cost of the project, and funds to raise. www.fourpointsymca.org
