In a 4-1 vote Feb. 8, the Williamson County Commissioners Court approved an agreement authorizing HBO to use county buildings to film the limited series “Love & Death.”

Starring Elizabeth Olsen, the HBO Max crime drama is based on true events that took place in Wylie, Texas, in 1980. Filming in Williamson County is expected to take place Feb. 24-March 6 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

According to the authorized use agreement, HBO will film in various locations outside and inside the Williamson County Courthouse, the justice center and the sheriff’s office sally port, all in Georgetown. The series filmed at several venues in Hutto from Sept. 27-Oct. 1.

HBO is set to pay the county’s general fund $100,000 and the Williamson County Historical Commission $10,000, according to the agreement.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Valerie Covey said the $100,000 would be used for improvements to the courthouse.

Additionally, commissioners said accommodations would be made for businesses on the square who could be negatively affected or even closed during filming.

“One of the things I was assured of ... is that any business that is shut down—and there is a possibility that will happen—is that they would be reimbursed for their total usual day of revenue,” County Judge Bill Gravell said. “To my knowledge all of the businesses were supportive of that. I just knew we couldn’t hurt any businesses.”

Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long was the sole member of Commissioners Court to vote against the agreement.

“I appreciate the funding coming in, but I just don’t want to go down the path of continuing to rent out our buildings for filming,” Long said.
