Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a new 10-year transportation plan from the Texas Department of Transportation in August, outlining a nearly $4 billion investment in the Austin area.
The big picture
The plan focuses on improving local roads and tackling major congestion points to keep up with rapid population growth and expanding economy. The investment falls under the more than $146 billion outlined for roads across the state.
“We must strengthen our roadways and improve congestion and safety to keep our economy booming and keep Texans moving. By investing billions of dollars in our transportation network today, we will build the future of Texas for generations to come,” Abbott said in a statement.
On Aug. 21, the Texas Transportation Commission approved the 10-year plan, known as the 2026 Unified Transportation Program, which outlines $101.6 billion in projects to enhance safety and community connections. This is the third year in a row the plan has topped $100 billion, with nearly $45 billion dedicated to project development and routine maintenance, according to a news release.
Zooming in
Many of the projects in the 2026 plan are roadway segments identified on Texas’ 100 Most Congested Roadways list.
Main thoroughfares across the Austin area are expected to see funding from the state, including I-35, SH 130, SH 71 near the airport, Loop 360, RM 620 and RM 1826. The plan also calls for millions allocated toward traffic management technology along I-35 and SH 71.
