Gamers with a special place in their heart for retro video games and robots are likely to enjoy two upcoming events in Austin.

Classic Game Fest will take place August 16–17 at Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road. The event will include live music, tournaments, game demos and various booths, making the event the "biggest and best retro video game convention in Texas," according to a news release.

Leading up the event, an elimination tournament on August 2 called SmashFest, a pro-level tournament for those passionate about the "Super Smash Bros." video game, will take place at various Game Over Video Games locations, including four Austin-area stores. The top four contestants from each store will receive free entry and a spot in the tournament finals, which take place at Classic Game Fest.

Attendees of Classic Game Fest may also participate in cosplay contests and buy and play retro games at various booths. Weekend passes are $10 for anyone 12 years or older.

Also taking place will be the fourth annual Texas Robot Roundup. The contest is free to spectators and will take place August 1 and 2 at the Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez St.

There will be more than 40 FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition teams going head-to-head, with the final matches beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.
