As of the third Monday of the school year, Frisco ISD has 45,886 students enrolled for the 2013-14 year—an addition of 3,258 students, or 7.64 percent growth from the third Monday of the 2012-13 school year.

Projections were for an enrollment of 45,344.

The number of students increased across the board in elementary, middle school and high school, but school officials said it was the elementary student increase that was the surprise.

"The fact that there are 1,100 more kindergarteners than seniors—this isn't going to slow down anytime soon," FISD Board of Trustees President Rene Ehmke said.

Four elementary schools, Ashley, Curtsinger, Mooneyham and Robertson, are past capacity and have been closed. Phillips and Sem elementaries are serving as overflow campuses.

To relieve crowding, four elementary schools are expected to open in 2014. Two of the elementary schools were originally expected to open in 2015, but construction was moved up because of student growth.

"I think probably the biggest surprise [of the school year so far] has been the need for these extra elementary schools, these two additional elementary schools," Superintendent Jeremy Lyon said. "To take them from still a year out to fast-tracking them and starting on them this year—thank goodness we have the capacity with the existing bond dollars, but it really spells the need for this next bond program to be able to continue to stay out front of that kind of growth, which we expect is going to continue."

James Reeder Newman Elementary will be built in the Newman subdivision at the southwest corner of Newman Boulevard and Briar Ridge Road. It will relieve Robertson, Phillips and Pink elementary schools.

Janice Stahly Scott Elementary will be built in the Reserve at Westbridge subdivision at the northeast corner of Millbend and Eden Drive in McKinney. It will relieve Mooneyham, Sonntag and Ashley elementaries.

A third will open in the Lawler Park Subdivision near the intersection of Orchard Hill Lane and Countrybrook Drive. It will relieve Curtsinger Elementary.

A fourth elementary will be built at the southeast corner of Lebanon Road and Lone Star Ranch Parkway. It will relieve Nichols, Bledsoe and possibly Allen Elementary.

Independence High School will also open in 2014.

Reedy High School (southwest corner of Stonebrook Parkway and 4th Army Drive), a middle school and at least one elementary school are expected to be opened in 2015.

The process of rezoning school boundaries is expected to begin later this fall.
