More than 14 years after opening, Cheapo Records, one of the largest used records stores in Texas, is going out of business.

The 10,000-square-foot store at 914 N. Lamar Blvd. is closing Dec. 24 because of a decline in sales and an increase in online competition, owner Jason Shields said Nov. 20.

"I'd love to keep it going, but there is no way that I could," he said.

Before it closes, Cheapo Records will host live performances from local and national bands, and offer daily sales and discounts until the inventory is gone. Shields, who ran the music label Texas Jamboree Records and a magazine of the same name, said he is looking forward to spending time with his family.

"I'm going to change my role in life and do something else, but I don't know what that is yet," he said. "I need to close this chapter and figure it out."
