Billy Wusterhausen will serve as the Leander Fire Department’s new fire chief.

Leander City Council unanimously approved Wusterhausen for the role during a meeting May 16.

“Our family is super excited about this opportunity to move forward and lead this fire department as we serve this community,” Wusterhausen said during the meeting.

Wusterhausen has 25 years of experience in fire and emergency management services, serving most recently as assistant fire chief in Round Rock. He is also a licensed paramedic and commissioned police officer.

Wusterhausen is tentatively scheduled to start his new role in June, according to a May 3 statement from the city.

He takes the place of former Fire Chief Bill Gardner, who retired in February.
