Visitors to Elizabeth Milburn Park in Cedar Park now have access to free wireless internet, and Spectrum internet customers are able to take advantage of free unlimited internet usage.
The city of Cedar Park held a soft launch of the pilot Wi-Fi program July 4. Director of Information Services Tim Scott said 679 devices connected to the park’s Wi-Fi on the first day, and he said there have been about 5,300 connections so far throughout July 27.
Cedar Park City Council
approved the pilot program with Spectrum in June 2016 that provides the internet usage in the park for three years at no cost to the city. Current Spectrum internet customers can access unlimited usage of the Wi-Fi in the park, and non-customers can receive 60 minutes per day at no cost with an option to purchase additional usage for around $3 per hour, Scott told council members during a Thursday meeting.
He said the city now has the option to engage with Spectrum on whether to expand to other city parks, or Cedar Park can choose to let the term expire and take down the Wi-Fi equipment after the three-year pilot program ends. Scott said city staff will make a recommendation to City Council after a period of evaluating the Wi-Fi program.
“What we’ve seen so far has been outstanding service from it, so we do want that chance to evaluate it and we’ll come back with recommendations on where we go next,” he said.
