Visitors to Elizabeth Milburn Park in Cedar Park could soon have access to free wireless internet.

City Council approved a pilot program agreement with Time Warner Cable during a council meeting June 23 to provide WiFi in the park for three years. As part of the pilot program there will be no cost to the city, Director of Information Services Tim Scott said.

City Council has long expressed an interested in exploring wireless internet options in the city’s parks, Scott said. He said Time Warner Cable first approached the city late last summer, and the two began to negotiate an agreement.

“We worked with [Time Warner Cable] to design an installation plan in support for the sheer volume of visitors that we get at that park through some of our events,” Scott told the council.

As part of the pilot program, current Time Warner Cable customers will receive unlimited time usage of the WiFi in the park, according to city documents. Non-customers will receive 60 minutes per day at no cost, with an option to purchase additional usage.

Time Warner Cable will pay for the installation, configuration and support of the wireless system. Scott said a start date for the installation is still being determined, and that the process is expected to take six to eight months.

“Since this pilot program installation could take longer or less time than expected … We will keep the community updated on the progress of the project," he said.
