Williamson County drivers are one step closer to having another connection between I-35 and Hwy. 29. Williamson County commissioners passed funding for an extension of the Southwest Bypass that would connect the two roads in Georgetown during their Sept. 14 meeting.

The project aims to complete the final phase of the southwestern loop around Georgetown, said Connie Odom, Williamson County’s public affairs manager.

“The Southwest Bypass extension will extend the two-lane Southwest Bypass from Wolf Ranch Parkway to Hwy. 29,” Odom said in an email.

The first phase was completed in fall 2018, and the second phase finished in May 2020, according to the Williamson County website.

Project construction will begin in late 2021 and has an anticipated completion of fall 2022. The $2.8 million construction project is funded by the 2019 Williamson County road bond.

Odom said that in addition to the extension, the Texas Department of Transportation will fund a $422,165 project that will add a right-turn lane and traffic signal at the new intersection of Hwy. 29 and the Southwest Bypass extension.
