Georgetown ISD’s Elementary School No. 11, which is scheduled to break ground May 3, will be named San Gabriel Elementary School after the board of trustees voted unanimously in favor of the name at its April 17 meeting.

Located in the Santa Rita Ranch neighborhood, the name was chosen because the school is located near the San Gabriel River, one of Georgetown’s significant geographic features, Superintendent Fred Brent said.

Funding for the $49.3 million school—expected to open ahead of the 2024-25 school year—was included in the $381 million bond passed in 2021.

The board also selected Future Ready Complex as the formal name for the district facility that will house advanced career and technical education programs; Bridges 18+, a program that serves students with special needs for up to four years after high school; Richarte High School, the district’s academic alternative school; the early learning center; and the health and wellness center.

Located at 5001 Airport Road, Georgetown, the facility broke ground in September and is slated to open ahead of the 2024-25 school year as well.

Trustee Stephanie Blanck addressed community members who she said wanted the complex to be named for a specific person, adding there are still opportunities to name different components within the facility after these people.

“After a lengthy discussion, I think giving them neutral names is very appropriate,” Blanck said.

Trustees also unanimously approved a change to the total cost of the Future Ready Complex. According to district documents, unforeseen circumstances, including gas utility service and modifications to Airport Road, have caused the project’s cost to increase by about $2.5 million. The total project is expected to cost $102.5 million.

The April 17 meeting was the last full board meeting for Brent as well as Trustee Melanie Conner, who is not running for re-election May 6. Brent announced his retirement April 3. From May 1-June 30, he will serve as superintendent emeritus, and Lindsay Harris will assume the role of interim superintendent May 1.
