When Gordon Logan moved to Georgetown in the mid-1980s, he operated a handful of hair salons in the Austin area. While business was steady, Logan said he noticed a missing niche in the market.

"We realized nobody in the beauty salon industry was paying any attention to men and boys," Logan said. "Back then, it was very common to see signs in the windows of beauty salons saying, 'men welcome.' But even though they were welcome, it wasn't a very comfortable environment for us."

In 1993, Logan opened the first Sport Clips Haircuts location, a sports-themed hair salon specializing in haircuts for men and boys.

Over three decades later, the Georgetown-based brand has become an international franchise with almost 300 Texas salons and about 1,900 locations in all 50 states.

What they offer

Sport Clips offers one-on-one consultations, haircuts, styling, beard trimming and detailing for men of all ages by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

During their visit, clients can enjoy watching sports on TV, a neck and shoulder massage, and a steamed towel treatment.

"Our an emphasis from Day One has been on [the] experience. Most men don't look forward to getting a haircut, so everything about our store is trying to make it as easy and frictionless as possible for our clients," Logan said.

Logan said every salon is equipped with reclining chairs and European-style shampoo bowls, which offer more comfort to the customer and stylist.

The impact

Today, the Sport Clips headquarters remains in Georgetown.

Logan has given back to dozens of local organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club of Georgetown; the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center; ROCK, Ride On Center for Kids; and the Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation, of which he is a board member.

In 2023, the company donated $1 million to the Central Texas YMCA to create new facilities in Georgetown.

"I think people like to be associated with a company that gives back to their community, both locally and nationally. It will always be a large part of our culture," Logan said.

A family affair

In 2020, Logan was succeeded by his son, Edward Logan, who took his place as the new president and CEO of Sport Clips.

Now, as chairman of the company, Logan said he focuses more on charitable efforts while Edward Logan handles franchise growth and day-to-day operations.

The future

In recent years, Sport Clips has partnered with Knoxville, Tennessee, barbershop owner, Frank Gambuzza to open three "upscale" concepts in Round Rock, Cedar Park and South Austin, offering more luxury-level services.

In the future, Gordon said more Gambuzza's Barbershop locations could be possible, though none are confirmed.
