Officials are aiming for the first full-service YMCA facility in Georgetown to open in 2028, Assistant City Manager Jack Daly said in an update to council members Aug. 25 at a City Council workshop.
About the project
Contractor Chasco broke ground on the 55,000-square-foot recreation facility in May. As of the workshop update, crews are working on base grading, initial excavation and underground utilities.
The new facility is a collaboration between the city and YMCA of Central Texas, with Georgetown funding $10 million of the construction through voter-approved general obligation bonds, which grants them partial ownership of the building.
“Initially we were thinking it was going to be a $23 million project,” said Jeff Andresen, president and CEO of the YMCA of Central Texas. “It ended up being a $38 million project. Imagine that when it takes that long to get there.”
The remaining cost will be funded by the YMCA of Central Texas, the Georgetown YMCA Founders Group, Sport Clips and local fundraising efforts. The local YMCA branch successfully raised over $6 million from the local community to bridge their required funding goal.
The new facility will provide recreation and community activities and events for Georgetown residents. Visitors can expect youth, family, health and senior wellness programs, according to a YMCA news release.
The update
The planned opening date for the main YMCA facility is January 2028, with the outdoor pool following in May 2028, officials said.
“We did a feasibility study in 2023 that said we need a facility to meet a need that Georgetown has,” District 4 council member Ron Garland said. “And in less than three years, we've come to the plan for an additional facility in a partnership with the YMCA.”
The background
The YMCA of Central Texas and the city of Georgetown began collaborating to deliver a new YMCA facility in February 2022, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
While the Georgetown Family YMCA has provided after-school childcare at Georgetown elementary schools, as well as youth programs and summer day camps at its storefront, the new building will be the city’s first fully equipped facility.
