A centerpiece in the Mueller neighborhood, Lake Park, will become an urban fishing destination this weekend.
Texas Parks & Wildlife on Feb. 8 will stock the community lake with approximately 2,000 rainbow trout. The effort to stock the lake with fish that can be caught, kept and cooked coincides with the weekly Mueller Farmers' Market, during which vendors will demonstrate how to prepare the trout. Market booths will also sell complementary ingredients and side dishes to help complete a fish meal.
Texas Parks & Wildlife, the state agency in charge of parks, will also host a "Take Me Fishing" trailer that teaches attendees about the state's different fish species and best fishing practices. In addition, musical act The Holy Child, a soul band based in South Austin, will perform during the farmers' market, which takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. each Sunday at the Browning Hangar, 4550 Mueller Blvd.
Fishers may also catch but not keep bass found in the Mueller ponds. Signs are posted near the waterways that indicate the difference between the bass and the trout, which were provided by the state.
Last year, Texas Parks & Wildlife also stocked approximately 1,200 rainbow trout into the Mueller pond.
