I’ve had a few readers get in touch with me via email to ask about the status of the city’s forthcoming Major League Soccer team, Austin FC.

On June 12, the team announced that fans had placed more than 30,000 season ticket seat deposits, essentially securing a place in line for season tickets when those go on sale sometime in the future.

The club’s stadium is set to hold 20,500 fans, but the deposits are just placeholders to give fans priority for season tickets. Single-game tickets will still be available closer to 2021, when the team is set to start play.

What about stadium construction? City Council approved a rezoning request from the team June 6 to move the process along. The next step for Austin FC will be to submit a site plan, which will include a traffic study and event-management plan.

Groundbreaking on the stadium is set to start by the end of this year. We’re still over a year from play, but there is plenty of news to cover.
