Austin residents will have an opportunity to provide input July 21 on I-35 safety improvements near Riverside Drive.

The Texas Department of Transportation will host an open house inside Martin Middle School, 1601 Haskell St., to present plans for proposed roadway improvements, such as new bridge crossings at Riverside Drive and Woodland Avenue and a wider bridge over Lady Bird Lake. The plan, still under review, also calls for creating collector-distributor lanes—one-way roads next to and separate from the highway that allows entering and exiting traffic to merge without disrupting highway traffic—under the Riverside Drive bridge to improve intersection traffic flow, according to TxDOT.

In addition, the state transportation agency would also modify existing lane configurations to improve sight distance and provide more bicycle and pedestrian pathways along the I-35 frontage roads and Riverside Drive.

Any feedback about the project proposal received before Aug. 3 will be taken into consideration before TxDOT makes any final decision. Those unable to attend the meeting should visit the online virtual house at My35.org.

The project plans could be finalized by early 2016, according to TxDOT.
