Austin will join Los Angeles and New York City as the only cities nationwide to receive Internet and television upgrades from Time Warner Cable, the company announced July 31.

TWC has already started increasing peak Internet speeds from 50 megabits per second to 300 mbps for more than 50 percent of its Austin-area customers, company spokeswoman Melissa Sorola said. Most customers automatically benefit from increased speeds, she said, while others must first upgrade modems via mail or through a TWC retail store. There is no cost to swap out modems, Sorola said.

In addition, as part of its new TWC Maxx program, the company will automatically upgrade digital video recorders, or DVRs, to allow for six programs to be recorded at once—up from two previously, Sorola said. There is also more room to store extra shows, up to 150 hours of high-definition content total. TWC customers gain access to more on-demand content—up to 75,000 hours, she said.

TWC Maxx also upgrades all analog channels to create an all-digital network that produces higher quality picture and sound. The digital conversion also frees bandwidth space to enable TWC to provide faster Internet service and other improvements.

Upgrades for all Austin-area customers are scheduled to be complete by the end of the year, Sorola said, although there is no timeline for when certain areas will receive service improvements.

San Antonio and Dallas are among seven cities anticipated to also receive TWC Maxx upgrades by the end of 2015.
