The city of Buda is gearing up to create a commission of residents that will advise city council on issues related to sustainability.

City staff have been exploring the creation of a sustainability commission since May, and city council voted to create the commission at the Sept. 20 council meeting.

The commission will serve as an advisory board to city council matters related to sustainability, such as environmental stewardship, social awareness and fiscal responsibility, according to city documents.

“The commission will take a holistic look [at] sustainability and make recommendations that best suit the residents of Buda,” said City Planner Meredith Johnson in an email. “[Their] goal is to address issues that are not only related to the environment but also to livability as a whole.”

Citizens serving on the commission will make policy recommendations to the council related to air quality, water conservation and green space preservation, Johnson said. The commission will examine best practices for development and how to promote a sustainably-built environment.

According to the city, the commission will also pursue grant opportunities, evaluate programs and policies, and develop educational opportunities related to sustainability for Buda residents. The commission will work alongside the parks department, water department and public works as needed.

The commission will consist of seven members, at least five of which will live within Buda city limits, with no more than two members living in the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, according to city documents. The members of the commission will serve two-year staggered terms; four members will be appointed in April of even-numbered years and three members will be appointed in April of odd-numbered years.

City officials are not sure when the monthly meetings will begin, Public Information Officer David Marino said in an email, but they are accepting applications to be appointed. Applications will be presented to City Council, which will make its recommendations and vote on applicants.
