District 9 is the most centrally located district in Austin's new 10-district City Council system, which was created to provide better geographic representation at the city level.

Consequently, council members Chris Riley and Kathie Tovo, two City Council incumbents whose residences fall within District 9 boundaries, must compete against each other to earn a second term in office. First-time candidate Erin McGann rounds out the field for the newly minted district.

Covering portions of East Austin, South Austin and downtown Austin, District 9 is one of the most politically active districts in Austin with more than 60,000 registered voters, according to the city of Austin. The district has the second-highest number of registered voters of any district despite District 9 having the second-smallest geographic area—approximately 13 square miles.
