Rare vintage World War II aircrafts and veteran aviators will visit Austin beginning July 3.

Atlantic Aviation at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will host four planes, including the B-17 Texas Raiders, a WWII flying fortress bomber maintained and flown by nonprofit group Gulf Coast Wing. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the plane fly over Austin at low altitude as well as meet Ed Olson, a 96-year-old Georgetown resident and former B-17 instructor and WWII aerial combat veteran. Olson will fly the B-17 for the first time in more than 70 years.

In addition to the B-17, three other vintage planes—the P-51 Mustang, the C-47 Skytrain and B-25 Mitchell, will also be on hand. The planes will arrive to the airport at noon July 3. Additional ground tours and adventure flights will be held 10 a.m.–6 p.m. July 4–6.

The flying fortress bomber is one of nine remaining flyable B-17s left in the world. This specific B-17, called Texas Raiders, has had $600,000 worth of repairs requiring more than 250,000 man-hours to bring the aircraft into flying condition.

Gulf Coast Wing flies the B-17 to air shows and other events throughout the state.
