Celebrate America's independence July 4 by starting the day with a morning 5K run and ending it with a colorful bang, but make sure to have transportation plans as the fireworks will not be held downtown this year.

5K

The eighth annual Freedom 5000 will take place at 8 a.m. at Camp Mabry followed by a Kids K at 9 a.m.

The Freedom 5000 5K costs $30, while the Kids K costs $10. Both help support the Texas Military Forces Museum and RunTex Foundation.

Fireworks

Later that evening, Austinites can enjoy a July Fourth celebration in a new location this year at The Circuit of the Americas, where the event is being held due to ongoing construction at Auditorium Shores in downtown Austin.

The event is free and begins at 8:30 p.m. with a concert from Austin Symphony Orchestra, which is led by Music Director Peter Bay. A fireworks show will then follow the concert over the race track at 9:30 p.m.

Transportation closures

Capital Metro will not operate the MetroRail, UT Shuttle or E-Bus routes on the holiday. The normal Saturday schedule will be implemented July 4, according to a news release.

The transit agency also is not providing transportation to The Circuit of the Americas for the fireworks shows, so event goers should plan for other options.

Regular Capital Metro service will return July 5.

Office and business closures

City of Austin administrative offices, recreation and senior centers will close for the holiday. So will Austin's museums, cultural centers, public libraries, Austin History Center, Recycled Reads bookstore and Zilker Botanical Garden.

However, Austin's pool, golf and tennis facilities will keep normal operating hours.

Travel tips

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is encouraging travelers to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before their departure time and to expect a 45-minute wait for security checks.

According to a news release, the airport's passenger traffic has increased by 5 percent this year, hence the need to arrive early on what is anticipated to be a busy holiday.

In light of July 4, airport officials also remind passengers that fireworks are not allowed in carry on or checked baggage.

Those flying should check what parking options are best by calling 512-530-3300.
