As tens of thousands of Austin residents face power outages and freezing temperatures Feb. 1, the city will operate four cold weather shelters.

The National Weather Service forecasts periods of freezing rains through Feb. 3 and significant ice accumulation for the Central Texas area. Austin Energy stated ice on the lines is causing power outages.

On Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the following shelters will be available:
  • Little Walnut Creek Branch Library, 835 W. Rundberg Lane, Austin
  • Terrazas Branch Library, 1105 E. Cesar Chavez St., Austin
  • Turner Roberts, 7201 Colony Loop Drive, Austin
  • Austin Recreation Center, 1301 Shoal Creek, Austin
Anyone needing shelter can call 512-305-4233 for more information.

Pets are not allowed in shelters, but shelter staff will contact Animal Services to provide care for the pet if a person arrives at a shelter with one.

Anyone in need of overnight shelter can go to the One Texas Center located at 505 Barton Springs Road for registration between 6 and 8 p.m.

Capital Metro announced it had suspended services for Feb. 1 to assist with bringing individuals to shelters.
