Early election results show Kathryn Whitley Chu, former accountant and current public school teacher, has a sizable lead against her opponent, Clint Small, in the race for the Austin ISD District 4 election, one of the five AISD board positions on the ballot this year.
Whitley Chu has earned 22,635 votes of the 31,508 ballots cast during early voting, representing about 72% of votes.
During her campaign, Whitley Chu emphasized her ability to handle Austin ISD's $1.68 billion budget given her financial experience as a former tax accountant and auditor as well as her master’s degree in professional accounting. She told Community Impact her biggest priority is resolving the teacher shortage and working on retaining employees in AISD.
Small, a local builder, focused his campaign on addressing “the small things,” such as leaky ceilings and hot gyms, as well as retaining and recruiting teachers. Small’s father and grandfather both served on the AISD school board.
The elected candidate will succeed Kristin Ashy, whose term expires in November.
