“We just realized we weren't having fun anymore.” co-owner Paula Samford said.
Labor shortages, aggressive auditor comptrolling, inflation and the rising cost of ingredients all started to make the business of serving over-the-top doughnuts a much more painful endeavor than it was set out to be, Samford said. Gourdough’s will continue to operate out of its South 1st Street trailer, and there are plans to open three new trailers throughout the Austin metro. They will also focus on catering and traveling to festivals, Samford said.
Samford said the past year took a toll on their customers, too, as Gourdough’s was forced to raise their prices due to inflation.
“Our food was meant to be a fun and affordable treat,” she said.
Gourdough's Public House was located at 2700 S. Lamar Blvd., Austin.
